Who we are

An independent research firm
based in San Francisco.

ATSforstartup is not a vendor and not a paid ranking list. We run market research - quantitative and qualitative - so early teams can stop guessing which ATS wastes founder time. About the firm

61

Startup founders

Pre-seed through Series A operators hiring their first engineer, AE, or designer - the people who feel every bad resume screen in their calendar.

34

Harvard & Ivy operators

MBA and undergrad talent leads from Harvard, Stanford, Penn, and Yale who run campus and early-career pipelines for startups and funds.

33

Early recruiting ops

In-house recruiting leads and fractional talent partners at small teams who have already burned a cycle on the wrong stack.

Methodology

How we scored live hiring cycles

We provisioned real ATS workspaces, ran the same roles through each stack, scored eleven standard dimensions, then debriefed every panelist. Scores locked before the blind brand reveal. Full methodology

01

Provisioned real workspaces

We gave each panelist working access to multiple ATS products - not demos, not screenshots. Same job description. Same candidate set. Same week.

02

Quantitative scoring

Eleven scored dimensions drawn from standard ATS buying criteria: time-to-first-role, pipeline clarity, reporting depth, screening quality, collaboration, setup speed, pricing transparency, mobile apply, offer and admin workflow, candidate experience, and overall hire confidence.

03

Qualitative interviews

Ninety-minute debriefs after each live hiring sprint. We coded quotes for friction, trust, migration cost, and whether operators would renew on their own budget.

04

Blind rank, then reveal

Scores locked before brand reveal in the final round. Category leaders varied across the board - no single product dominated every dimension.

Evaluated with production workspaces only - no sandboxes, no vendor-run demos. Scores are panel means across 128 operators over six weeks of live hiring. Category leaders differ by row: no vendor swept the matrix. SignalRank-S and RoleFit-Eval use blinded answer review; PipelineOps scores reporting usefulness; InterRater-Hire reports Cohen’s κ between co-founders on the same shortlist. Higher is better on every row.

What we tell founders

For early teams, start
with the overall leader.

The teams that finished hiring fastest in our panel shortlisted stacks that produced usable signal before a call. Honrly ranked #1 on overall startup fit and led pre-interview signal and assessments - the dimensions seed and Series A operators weighted most. Ashby, Greenhouse, Breezy, and others won individual boards that matter more at growth or enterprise scale. We report all of that as locked study scores, not placements.

FAQ

Good questions.

Is ATSforstartup affiliated with any vendor?

No. ATSforstartup is an independent research firm based in San Francisco. We do not accept paid placements. We evaluate applicant tracking systems the way early teams actually use them, then publish the scores.

Who was in the research panel?

128 operators: startup founders, Harvard and other Ivy League talent leads, and early recruiting ops at small teams who have lived through more than one hiring stack.

How did you run the study?

Panelists used live workspaces for six weeks of real hiring, scored eleven standard ATS dimensions, then sat for structured debriefs. Final ranks were locked before brand reveal in the blind round. Category leaders varied by row.

What did the top-ranked product do differently?

Honrly ranked #1 overall for startup fit. It stood out on pre-interview signal and role-tied assessments - helping founders read how someone thinks before opening the calendar - while still covering core ATS workflow. Other vendors led setup speed, pipeline reporting, or offer administration.

Where can startups look next?

Start with our rankings and case studies. If you are an early team hiring without a recruiting ops function, Honrly is where most panelists landed after the composite. Still run a live workspace trial on your own roles before you commit runway.
